Walker Fire Protection recognised in two categories at Fire Protection Association Awards 2018

November 9, 2018

FPA Australia has a proud history of excellence dating back to the founding of the Association in 1960. Today the Fire Protection Industry Awards Gala Dinner recognises and honours the founding values of the Association through the recognition of excellence across a range of areas within the fire protection industry.

This year Walker Fire Protection was recognised with both the Harry Marryatt Award for Fire Protection Company of the Year, 50+ employees and the award for Fire Protection Project of the Year Over $1 million for the AIR5428 Phase 1 Pilot Training System Facilities Project at RAAF Sale!

Harry Marryatt Fire Protection Company of the Year 50+ employees

In honour of Harry Marryatt* and the founding principle of the Association, this award recognises those companies that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the Australian fire protection industry.

Established in 1894, the Walker name is one of the oldest in the Australian fire protection industry. The company built its reputation on big pipe installations and fit-outs. In nearly a century of operations, Thos. Walker and Sons tackled some of Australia’s largest industrial pipe installations and its work could be found in many of the country’s major power stations and paper mills, Australian Navy warships and Shell’s oil refinery in Geelong.

Part of the A.G. Coombs Group since 1990 Walker Fire Protection provides leading specialist fire protection systems design, construction, and installation, commissioning and warranty, project management, and ongoing inspection, testing and essential safety measures management, for the full range of fire protection systems.

Fire Protection Project of the Year Over $1 million – AIR5428 Phase 1 Pilot Training System Facilities Project RAAF Sale

This Award recognises outstanding management and administration of a fire protection project that showcases the alliance between the managing company, the design team including the consultant/engineer, and the contractor to successfully complete the fire protection project. This project delivered the Department of Defence a turnkey pilot training solution that integrates physical and synthetic training environments.

The project supports the introduction of the new fleet of cutting-edge PC-21 training aircraft, by providing state of the art simulation facilities, and an electronic learning environment.

Delivered by Managing Contractor, Laing O’Rourke Australia, the $329.8 million project included the construction of facilities to accommodate six flight simulators, twenty-eight aircraft shelters, five maintenance bays and enclosed storage for a further 17 aircraft under almost 6000m² of hangar area, as well as a state of the art learning environment and working accommodation to support the training program.

Walker Fire Protection was engaged by Laing O’Rourke Australia in late 2016 to detail design, install and commission specialist fire protection systems for the new facilities. These systems were commissioned in February 2018.
