UTS Dr Chau Chak Wing Building opens

Australia’s first Frank Gehry building, the remarkable Dr Chau Chak building at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), has opened its doors in preparation of welcoming 1,630 students and staff.

The new facility was opened by the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, who stated that the $180 million, 12-storey, 16,030 square metre building with its remarkable façade is “The most beautiful paper bag I’ve ever seen”.

A.G. Coombs Projects was appointed by construction managers Lend Lease to deliver mechanical services to the unique building. The team successfully mastered the challenges around integrating air conditioning and mechanical systems into the building’s irregular shape, complex design and multi-purpose use.
