The new facility will be co-located with Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, Victoria, and with the new Monash Health Translation Precinct that will bring breakthroughs in health research to its patients. It promises to deliver an extra 60,000 outpatient treatments per year, as well as 34 additional inpatient beds in neonatal care, three new 32-bed paediatric wards, three children’s operating theatres and a children’s procedure room, as well as medical imaging facilities.

Appointed by the project’s managing contractor, Lend Lease Building, A.G. Coombs is responsible for installing and commissioning the hospital’s new mechanical and electrical systems as well as the new HVAC system, a Building Management Controls System (BMCS), and specialist hospital systems such as medical gasses and pneumatic tube. Working as part of the design team with Lend Lease and designers Waterman AHW, A.G. Coombs has to date contributed value management initiatives and solutions, including the rationalisation of zoning and of the BMCS, chiller and boiler capacities, boiler types, and recommendations on appropriate cooler heat rejection systems.

A key challenge faced will be the integration of the hospital’s new specialist systems into its existing systems.

Andrew Miller, Services Manager at Lend Lease, is confident in A.G. Coombs’ ability to conquer the challenges and successfully deliver the project.

“The Monash Children’s Hospital is one of the biggest capital infrastructure projects underway to date for Monash Health; it will help to ensure that more children in Victoria’s south east will have access to a leading healthcare service close to their homes when they are in need of specialist care”, he said. “Lend Lease is pleased to be managing the construction of this critical facility. We trust in A.G. Coombs’ knowledge of and experience in successfully delivering healthcare facilities, and we look forward to working with the team in building this world-class 230-bed hospital.”

The hospital’s two-year construction program sees completion of building works scheduled for September 2016.
