Building information modelling (BIM) is a digital model-based design and documentation process that allows the building and construction industry to manage buildings more efficiently. While Architects, Structural Engineers and Mechanical Engineers have been the earlier adopters, the Fire Protection Industry is now taking up the technology.

The article provides an introduction to the application of BIM to fire services design and installation, and the many advantages this can bring.

It also explains the BIM MEPAUS initiative.

In May 2018 Fire Protection Association Australia announced a Memorandum of Understanding with the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association. The key goal of the MoU is for collaboration between the two peak industry bodies to deliver a standardised approach to building information modelling practices and data management through the BIM-MEPAus initiative.

This initiative aims to develop a national standard practice for BIM, focusing specifically on mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire services
