A.G. Coombs has been shortlisted as finalists in two government safety awards for its innovative prefabricated services riser technology:

• NSW WorkSafe SafeWork Awards; “Best solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue”.
• Victorian WorkCover Authority Health and Safety Awards; “Best Solution to a Specific Workplace Health and Safety Issue”.

The NSW WorkSafe award recognises excellence in developing and implementing a solution to an identified health and safety issue. The joint Lend Lease / A.G. Coombs’ submission focuses on the Barangaroo South project, where prefabrication technologies are helping to ensure the safe and efficient installation of what are believed to be the tallest prefabricated services risers in Australia.

The Victorian WorkCover award recognises individuals and organisations that have developed and implemented a solution to a health and safety issue in their own workplace. A.G. Coombs’ entry referenced the significant prefabrication works undertaken at a complex new university building in Melbourne.

The single biggest safety risk identified in the construction of many high-rise buildings is the installation of services risers, with the potential for falls from height and exposure to materials/debris falling from above. On major building projects, prefabrication methodologies result in the transfer of thousands of hours of complicated site installation into a controlled factory environment, with the need to work at height in risers virtually eliminated.
