AIRAH’s Accredited Professional Diploma of Building Services is the definitive postgraduate training course for entrants to the HVAC&R industry. The course covers essential HVAC&R knowledge for graduates who are employed in consulting or contracting firms, but have had little exposure to the HVAC&R industry. It provides participants with a comprehensive and practical HVAC&R training for the building services environment.
A.G. Coombs have a long-standing involvement with the AIRAH Professional Diploma of Building Services including reference group and curriculum development roles and importantly with successful participants in the Diploma since the inaugural intake. The AIRAH Diploma forms an important part of A.G. Coombs’ comprehensive Graduate Training Program.
What drew you to Engineering?
Throughout school I was drawn to study engineering as I’d always been interested in how things worked. An interest in energy and sustainability led me to an internship with an energy efficiency consultancy focusing on HVAC and building services. This internship gave me an insight to the world of HVAC and I was fortunate to be accepted for a Graduate Engineering position at A.G. Coombs.
Three years into the Engineering role how has your work aligned with what you gained from the AIRAH Diploma program?
The AIRAH Diploma program has been very useful to assist in piecing together and making sense of all the technical concepts and terms I’d been exposed to in the office, in meetings and on site that I didn’t fully understand. I constantly find myself involved everyday tasks that are related to content provided in the AIRAH program.
What do you enjoy most about working in the field of engineering?
I really enjoy working as an Engineer in this industry as I’m able to partake in technical work whilst sitting right in the middle of a developing project and dealing with a number of different people on a daily basis. As the Engineer, you are in contact with project managers, design consultants, suppliers, sub-contractors, experienced tradespeople and many others whilst responsible for managing the technical side of project to achieve the best possible outcome.
What do you enjoy about working at A.G. Coombs?
Working for a diverse company like A.G. Coombs is great as it provides the opportunity to learn at all stages of the building services lifecycle and on some of the largest and most complex building services projects in Australia. Although the majority of my time has been spent in Engineering, amongst some very experienced people, I’ve also had the opportunity to assist our Estimating staff, spent a very instructive period with our commissioning technicians on site, and did a rotation through the modelling and drawing office.
What highlight projects have you worked on so far?
The 3 that come to mind are very different projects in different places with diverse technical challenges:
