RMIT University is Australia’s largest tertiary institution, its city campus has occupied several blocks of Melbourne’s inner north CBD for decades.

In the February edition of the AIRAH Ecolibrium magazine, Sean McGowan looks at the recent adaptive reuse project which has linked multiple existing buildings – an epic $220 million-dollar undertaking which has effectively combined the lower levels of four RMIT buildings into one, transforming the campus.

A.G. Coombs Advisory was engaged on the New Academic Street project as the Green Star Independent Commissioning Agent (ICA). Providing building services commissioning advice to the project team through the design stages of the project, right through to the end of post-completion tuning This followed on from successfully providing ICA services to a number of major projects at RMIT since the late 2000s.

A.G. Coombs Advisory project engineer, James Dalglish reflects; “as an ICA, we like to get involved as early as possible in the design and construction process, the review of early project design documentation allows us to provide very useful operability, maintainability, controllability and commissionability-related advice that is valuable in the later project stages.”
