A.G. Coombs has helped to seal a time capsule that is being repositioned in the redeveloped Darling Harbour Live (DHL) precinct.

The initiative was instigated by Infrastructure NSW; the NSW Government agency managing the 20 hectare transformation of this very significant site.

Filled with a range of artefacts and information about the history of Darling Harbour – including its Indigenous heritage, early colonial years, industrial use as a goods yard, railway node and port, right through to its more recent use as an events and entertainment destination – the time capsule celebrates a significant milestone in one of the State’s most important infrastructure projects; the construction of Sydney’s new convention, exhibition and entertainment precinct.

The official burial ceremony took place in May 2014, when the capsule was dedicated by NSW Premier Mike Baird and Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner. It will now be placed into its final position this month – located in front of the Exhibition Building in close proximity to the brand new harbour front boulevard – with a plan to reopen it in 40 years.

As design and construction mechanical and HVAC services provider on the DHL project, A.G. Coombs was asked to assist Infrastructure NSW with sealing the capsule. This entailed managing the gas charging process to remove any air from within the capsule, leaving a completely inert atmosphere to protect the artefacts within.

The capsule has been entrusted to the people of NSW in 2054 so that they may continue the story of Darling Harbour; bringing to the forefront the project’s commitment to engaging with the community, all of whom are crucial to the project’s success. This is also reflected in builder Lendlease’s recent award of a 6 Star Green Star Communities (v1) rating from the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) for the development’s master planned community, which is based on sustainability in the categories of governance, innovation, liveability, economic prosperity and the environment.

A.G. Coombs is proud to be associated with the DHL project and to be involved in the DHL time capsule initiative, and congratulates Lendlease on its Green Star achievements.
