Performance-Based Design in Fire Engineering—Friend Or Foe?

September 5, 2023

The Shergold–Weir Building Confidence report exposed widespread non-compliance in constructed buildings, and failures by authorities, designers, and government regulators. Performance-based design solutions were a specific concern.

Many facilities have complex performance-based fire safety strategies that require particular maintenance and testing procedures, often the lack of documentation results in the loss of knowledge and understanding of these requirements and this leads to inadequate operational and maintenance practices, and then compliance issues.

In Issue Three of Fire Australia magazine, A.G. Coombs Advisory’s Marcus Royle explores this issue and provides insights into fire engineering and the challenges in ensuring that this approach results in effective fire and life safety protection outcomes.
